What happens when a holiday falls on a Sunday
In Spain, holidays that fall on a Sunday are not automatically moved to the Monday, as happens in other countries. It is each autonomous community that decides whether to move them or replace them with another day, so the map varies: in 2026, 1 November and 6 December fall on a Sunday and their transfer depends on the region.
For the company, the practical consequence is that you cannot plan the Constitution Day long weekend until you have seen the regional calendar. And if an employee works on a national public holiday, the compensation depends on the collective agreement: the usual arrangement is equivalent time off or a salary supplement.
Effect on payroll and deadlines
A national public holiday is paid and non-recoverable: the employee receives their normal salary and the company cannot offset it with another day. It is not deducted from the extra payment nor accrued as time owed.
